SCOT, SCOTTISH, SCOTCH?
As if they didn’t have enough kings, lochs, bens and glens to confuse a visitor, they’re rather
insistant about what they call anything to do with themselves.
Harking back to that ancient Gaelic tribe (from Ireland), a “Scot” is a native of Scotland. So is a “Scotsman” or a “Scotswoman.”
Almost anything which comes form or is
Typical of Scotland is “Scottish,” as in Scottish hospitality, Scottish romanticism, Scottish thrift.
But when it comes to whisky, it’s always “Scotch” whisky (but a wee dram will get the message across in any Scottish pub). Also
permissible: Scotch egg, Scotch terrier, Scotch broth, Scotch tape.
It also seems perfectly straightforward if you’re a Scot with Scottish logic.....
